Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon takes the reader on a journey of adventure through the Olympic National Forest in the Pacific Northwest. The story introduces us to Tom, William and Myra as they are getting ready for a backpacking journey into the forest to visit Tom's grandfather’s grave. Unexpectedly, Tom’s ex-wife drops off his previously unknown 13 year old grand-daughter named Sarah. He considers cancelling the trip as he feels it might be dangerous with a young, inexperienced hiker. When Tom reveals his Native American roots William and Myra present some valid reasons for taking Sarah. Tom reluctantly agrees. Sarah is not happy with Tom and feels she is at the end of the earth. Tom can see that she will be willful and stubborn but hopes the hiking experience will be good for her. During the journey Sarah gets upset and disappears for eight days. When she returns she has quite a story to tell, one that Tom struggles to understand. Because a very old relic is lost, they make a second more dangerous trip back to try to find it. During this journey Sarah tells the rest of her tale.
There are many aspects of this book that I particularly like. The author, Charlie Sheldon, has the background and experience to write a story of this quality with a depth that is fresh and engaging. There is enough mystery and action to keep the reader guessing.
As a lover of history, legends and myths of ancient people this book was very appealing. I particularly enjoyed the vivid description of the landscape as well as the inclusion of the map illustrations. This helped me to get an understanding of what the area of the Olympic National Forest looks like.
I personally did not find fault with this book. I can understand that some readers may feel lost when confronted with Sarah’s difficult to believe explanation of what happened during the eight days she was missing. The way she is described upon her reappearance helped me understand what may have happened. As the main story unfolds I believe the reader will begin to see the pieces coming together.
The ending might also appear to be sudden, I thought that at first. After some reflection, I felt it was handled carefully and with regard to the native people and their heritage. It may have left questions but as Sergei explains there is much that has yet to be discovered. Tom, William, Myra and Sarah emerge from their hazardous journey with a new understanding of each other and the incredibly mysterious world around them. I enjoyed how Sarah explained what she believed when she was lost for eight days and what she realized once she was back home with her grandfather.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It seems to have been very well edited. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy history and adventure mixed with ancient legends. There is some violence particularly in Sarah’s story but not overly graphic.
