Ghost Detectives, authored by Charles Townsend, was a free book. I checked out the sample of the book on Amazon.com and was intrigued enough to download it.
I found myself unable to put it down. Author Townsend has managed to write a fascinating tale of a murder mystery using an unusual protagonist and his side-kick. The main character, Charles Benson, comes to the realization that he has died under mysterious circumstances and entered the ghostly realm. Charlie meets Lizzie, another ghost. This is where the fun starts!
Together they launch an investigation into the circumstances of Charlie’s sudden demise. The narrative keeps reader’s interest as Charlie learns the pros and cons of being a ghost. Charlie meets Lizzie and she takes on the task teaching him all of the “tricks of the trade” and it doesn’t hurt that she is a shameless flirt. She gives him tips on things he can and cannot do as a ghost. Along the way, as he practices these techniques, he begins to enhance his abilities.
While they meet other ghosts, friendly and renowned for their longevity, they continue to investigate Charlie’s death. It is during this time that they become aware of Police Inspector Anderson and Sergeant Jane Hart, assigned to his case, which they presume to be a suicide. Using his newfound ghost knowledge Charlie is able to persuade Sergeant Hart that his demise was not “suicide-related.”
Charlie’s first encounter with the antagonist, an evil ghost referred to by the others as “Malice,” who forcefully confronts newly deceased ghosts and forcibly makes them cross over, which violates a code. His involvement plays out as one more mystery until the astonishing ending, which I won’t give away.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ghost Detectives, the author wrote a story that I was at first skeptical about and turned it into a most enjoyable read. I understand there are more books by the author in a series on Amazon.com. I know I will be checking these out to see more adventures with Charlie and Lizzie.
I am rating the book with 3 out of 4 stars due to several typos in the book that keep it from earning 4 out of 4. I am rating it 4 out of 5 stars because of the errors in editing. I loved the idea of the book and look forward to the author’s works in this series.
I gladly recommend this book as a great read for those who like crime mysteries because it is certainly a twist on your everyday “whodunit.”
