Liz goes through a lot in her young life and she leans on the wrong people. In her mind they will help her and it looks like they will. All Liz ends up doing is destroys her self to please a self-centered Guru. Liz isn't the only one being fooled but, is one of the only ones to wake up at first. Judy plays a huge part in Liz freeing herself from the cult. Liz found the courage to stand up and take her life back.
The Cult Nextdoor is a very well written book. I enjoyed reading this book very much. I was confused by some of the terms used, but after looking them up i understood. The main characters challenges were very relate able. There were so many up's and down's that I couldn't stop reading. I would definitely refer this book to many of my friends and family. Once you read the introduction you know whether or not it's the type of book you want to read.
There are a few things that I disliked and one being the long chapter list. It is very imformative but could be combined a little. Words like septuagenarian aren't in my vocabulary, so i had to keep looking them up to understand the tone and meaning. Appendix A is a bit long and could fit better in the time line if sumarized. Apendix B is also a bit long with how many sections the book has. Overall I couldnt find very many flaws in this book.
I absolutely love The Cult Nextdoor so many things about it are fantastic. The acknowledgements are beautiful and the Bible verse just adds to it. The forward opens your eyes to what a cult is and shows we are all looking for something to guide us. I adore how imaginative it is, I can imagine the room Liz is in and all the people around her. Each twist and turn I couldn't read fast enough to read the results. I did get emotional when Rachel passed, reading the passage brought tears to my eyes.
This is the first cult book I have ever read and I'm glad I read it. The domino effect of events was mesmerizing. I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I chose 4 because of the great story line and how well it is understood. I can sympathize with Liz being abandoned emotionally. I love how it goes back and forth between authors getting both points of view. One view from a mother like figure and the other a young woman.
