Review of the Book- Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants.
Author: Caleb J. Boyer
Publishing Date: December 20, 2017
Author Caleb J. Boyer has managed to tell an immersive story of two best friends who wake up on a strange Island and don’t remember how they got there. Without any supplies and a shelter to hide, they don’t know what to do next. They desperately need to get out of this strange island and they have a weird feeling that something is wrong with the place.
Half heartedly, they start to explore the island. On the way they face different problems which tests different aspects of their abilities but one thing in common, their friendship. Once they overcome a challenge, they somehow get transported to another unknown place which awaits a new challenge. After overcoming such four challenges, we wonder what happens next as the book ends on a suspense note.
The author has interestingly described the world of Island. We can totally relate with the characters and imagine what is going in their world. The narrative style of the author suits the thriller genre of the book. The age of the two friends Ryan and Matthew is not stated but it doesn’t create any problem at all. The book is very immersive and compels us to turn the page every time. The book ends on a suspense not though but the author leaves a note about it.
The plot of the story is successfully set up in the start where neither we or the characters know where are they. So we are always wondering what happened with them before and this keeps us invested in the book. There is a little violence in the story but that is not exaggerated neither we imagine it in severe graphic sense. We can totally relate to the Author's motive to feel it like a "Game" and hence he is successful in doing it. We couldn't actually figure out the age of Ryan and Matthew but as per their conversation, I can assume it between 12-15 years.
The book is best suited for teens but anyone who loves suspense and thriller can read it. The book is in very simple language which can be a bummer for some readers but it doesn’t create any negative impact on the environment of reading. The narration changes between first person to third person view which is not a problem when you are narrating a thriller. The book best emphasises on the need of best friends and their importance. There are no grammar and spelling mistakes as per my inspection. The book is much recommended to anyone who loves this genre and the cliffhanger ending. I would give this book a 4 out of 4 rating. The book is a nice read and deserves a place in shelf of a book lover.
