Official review: Pancake Money by Finn Bell

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub review of "Pancake Money" by Finn Bell.]

The book Pancake money is about criminal acts accompanied by psychological issues within Dunedin in New Zealand. The title 'Pancake money' drew a lot of attention to me and was very anxious to find out the details of the book. A boy by the name Pollo used to enjoy pancake money from his mother mostly when his father was drunk.

A time comes and an ugly scene of murder is witnessed where three priests of the Catholic Church are killed by unknown person in cold blood. From the look of things, the killings appears too similar for one to conclude that the killings were done by the same murderer. The case is being investigated by two cops, Pollo and Bobby where Pollo is now an adult at late forties and Bobby is twenty eight. The two gentlemen are married where Pollo has two children and Bobby has one. The second murder provokes the authorities to form a taskforce to deal with the atrocities. However, Bobby and Pollo do their investigations in a background manner as they try to see the connection between the incidences. Four priests, Father Mucci, Black, Bern, and Corcoran are the founders of a rehabilitation center for priests with sexual tendencies. Among the four, three have already been killed and the remaining one is also a target. The corps are doubting that it might be too late and another innocent life might be lost.

The story however changes direction when John Maihi's son commits suicide. There seems to be a serial killer whose intentions are unknown. The killings remain a mystery to everyone for it is unknown whether the murderer was doing it for money, power or sex. There must be a motive in order to find out who the killer was as well as solving the case. The author stylishly takes us through fiction filled with mystery.

There is a lot of detailed story in Pancake money novel. The Maori together with Manga Kahu tribes of New Zealand are well discussed in details. The writer is consistent with facts that are satisfying to the reader where character names symbolizes certain traits. There is a smooth flow of the whole narration that captures the whole attention of the reader. The issue of colonialism is deeply discussed and its effects on the people. The novel has broadened up to discuss several aspects such as mental illness, murder, sexual abuse, colonisation, among others.

I love this book due to the fact that every aspect discussed here is full of mystery and suspense and keeps the reader with a lot of anticipation to find out what happened. This eventually makes one find oneself at the last page of the book.

Due to the detailed narration of the story and the ability to draw the whole attention of the reader to keep on reading, I give it 4 out of 4 stars. It has been well written and edited in the right manner. I can recommend it to readers and more so those who love criminal stories as well as those who would like to become detectives in future. I can also recommend that the author continues with the same spirit. To conclude, this is such a good work by Finn Bell.

I really liked this book, too. How he wrapped all the details into the same plot, while keeping it all suspenseful and interesting is the mark of a true artist.
"I love reading another reader’s list of favorites. Even when I find I do not share their tastes or predilections, I am provoked to compare, contrast, and contradict. It is a most healthy exercise, and one altogether fruitful." T.S. Eliot
