Truly gripping, this book captures your attention from the very first page. Finn Bell’s articulate wording and creative plot comes to life in his writing. This masterpiece centres a crime thriller plot, which is evidenced and summarised with psychological reasoning and a detailed depiction as how the human mind works. The book’s captivating narrative explains criminality in its most intense form, intwined with a splash of humour for good measure. The book is very well written, with each word making you see through the characters eyes. Feel their emotions and join them through their tears, laughter, angst and confusion. The journey of the plot and the emotional rollercoaster with many unexpected twists and turns, means this is any crime thriller fans dream book.
The story line follows Detective Bobby Ress on the case, at what starts as a classic gruesome murder, however quickly the case escalates, promptly turning into a multiple homicide scenario with a serial killer targeting Old priests, even murdering them in grisly biblical fashion. Bobby, alongside his co-detective Pollo, are put on the ghastly case which begins with the first murder, and ends with suicide, three more murders, and a suspicious kidnapping. Their mission set to find and stop the killer while protecting the Tegere Servare, the other priests and their adopted son Liam Tull, especially with the dangerous Jones Maihi on the loose. Things take a turn for the worse and Bobby is left with a dilemma, chancing everything to draw the right outcome.
Alongside a captivating plot, the book has a psychological reasoning behind it, which evidences and explains the rationale behind the thoughts of the characters. This helps bring the story to life even more with the eccentric and imaginative writing. Furthermore this assists in humanising the characters, again bringing them, and their activities to reality. On the other hand, at some points in the story, the readers focus is taken off the plot and the characters and drawn to the psychological explanations, distracting from the plot a little too much.
Some of the things I liked most in this story was how real the characters appeared with their emotions, written in such a way the reader feels as though they are the characters, as they can easily lose themselves in their imagination. Moreover the psychological theme is incredibly insightful and fascinating. I for one, am rather curious about how the mind works, and I found this book to be brilliant at quenching my thirst for knowledge. However, I did find that at some points the wording was too bulky, and could have been spaced out with paragraphs, to make it a bit easier to read, for examples pages 244-248, here there are some rather large bulks of writing that would be easier to read if it was spread out.
Overall this book was more than satisfying and hooked me from the first page. I have read it twice since I got it and it hasn’t disappointed me. I would highly recommend this book and rate this book as 4 out of 4 stars. It deserves such a high rating because it’s focus is not only on the story’s plot line, but on the psychological reasoning behind it. Furthermore I would happily recommend this book to anyone, friend or foe. I think the book is set to target teens and older based on the rather graphic scenes involved, despite their brutal content, the scenes are tastefully written to cater to a wide variety of audience, with the crime thriller theme, with a touch of humour and a hint of romance. Therefore this book is highly recommended to anyone seeking a remarkable crime thriller, to send them on a climatic journey.
