The book Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat is fun and entertaining book for all ages. The story revolves around Inca, a cat from London, who is a detective. Inca is the head of Inca & Company Detective Agency. Included in her company is her brother, Frommage, who is a tabby cat. Cara, her sister, is a Siamese cat. Terrence is a dog that works for the detective agency and is owned by Solo, a famous detective, in his own right. The book starts with Inca’s family on vacation in Sri Lanka. The book chronicles the mischief Inca and her family get into. Along the way the family meets new animal friends and, also, discovers an old sword has gone missing. Being the head of a detective agency, a missing sword is right up Inca’s alley. Inca and the team do some investigating and some sneaking around with their new friends to try to solve the mystery of the missing sword and find the culprits who took it.
Inca, the main character, proves to be highly independent. She is very witty and intelligent. The story is told in a diary format, written from her point of view. In her diary entries, Inca is very descriptive in what has happened that day and who was involved. Some of her diary entries are accompanied by illustrations. She gets interviews and different accounts from her team to help solve the mystery. As much as she wants to be completely independent, the story proves that sometimes you need help from your team.
This book contains great cultural influence. There is a lot of description of the team’s life back in London. Frommage, was born in France, and his love of cheese comes up frequently throughout the story. The landscape of Sri Lanka was described in beautiful detail, as was the traditional dress of one of the local characters.
There isn’t a lot that I disliked about this book. I thought it was a wonderful story and extremely well written. However, at the beginning, I did have to reference the family tree to try to get the characters straight. A picture of all the characters would have been of great assistance. It would have been helpful to have Mom with all her furry kids and then Solo with Terrance and each of the characters with their immediate family unit. I also wish there was more illustrations. The story takes place in Sri Lanka and I was hoping for illustrations of the beautiful beach and the little cottage they are staying in.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I think this book was wonderfully written. Despite this book being part of a series, it can be read alone or out of sequence from the rest. All the characters are interesting and have their own personalities that shine through the story. The author keeps you engaged in the story from beginning to end. I think children and adults will enjoy the story of Inca and her friend’s adventures.
