They say when someone shows you who they are believe them the first time. Lucy is a high flying lawyer who never lets anything get in the way of her success. She proves this earlier on in the book by ridding herself of a murder charge and winning herself a husband in the process.
While on her honeymoon with her new husband Luke, she is asked to represent a new client and she accepts the offer. Her new client Hower is accused of raping a teenage girl. Lucy is the only one who believes in his innocence. Eventually they lose the case and in unexpected turn of events Lucy runs off with her client to Africa. It becomes clear that she was only married to Luke for convenience.
The Spirit of Want is a tragic drama with a bit of romance. It focuses on a few main characters with very different personalities. They react quite differently when put in similar situations. The protagonist Lucy might be difficult to relate to only because she reaches a level of self-actualization that many have not. The other characters play supportive roles in telling the story of Lucy’s life. This captivating tale takes place in the United States and Africa.
The revelations in this book will shock you. Each time you think you have Lucy figured out she surprises you. There is sibling rivalry between Lucy and Elizabeth and this creates drama from the start right till the end.
Few people in life will ever be as passionate as Lucy. She has her faults but she is unforgettable. In life she always chooses the path less trodden unlike her husband Luke who is quite passive. Not many people would run off and start a new life at the drop of a hat. That is exactly what she does when she runs off to Africa with Hower Baine. It turns out that she and Howie are quite similar in many ways.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Lucy has an admirable ability to turn things around whenever she is in a position of weakness. She changes workplaces quite a few times and always ends up making circumstances work in her favor. Ruthless pragmatism is not one of the most endearing qualities in a person, but Lucy embodies this quality without being an obvious villain. The author does a good job demostrating that she is a product of her environment.
