Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a story about finding yourself within life's adventures. Tom and his two friends are off to a hiking trip in the Olympic peninsula when his granddaughter, Sarah, is dropped off onto his front door. William and Myra convince Tom not to put off the trip and bring Sarah with them. Tom is hesitant to include Sarah as she is a complete stranger and she does not have hiking experience. Sarah, who is in a tough time in her life, is bought along into the wilderness.
Tom, William, and Myra share stories and legends of their native people. The land they are trekking into is in danger of becoming a mining area. Tom and his friends are preparing to fight to keep the conservation. During one of their stops, Sarah encounters an ancient bear which she sketches into her pad. Tom finds it hard to believe the experience. Later, Sarah becomes angry and runs off. She is missing for eight days and makes a dramatic return.
While Sara is missing, she has a vision of a time when her ancestors are traveling to their native land. She shares her incredible adventure with Tom, William, and Myra. The group returns home all the while knowing there is more to Sarah's story. After having to go back into the wilderness to retrieve an ancient artifact, they learn the remainder of Sarah's account and learn that it is not them guiding Sarah but her who has been guiding them all the while. The vision Sarah has helps to bind them all together and ensures the land is secured.
Strong Heart is a story within a story. It is an interesting read and easy to follow. Adventure and mystery are found within the content. A lot of the context involves speaking parts. I found that I had to go back just a bit to keep the characters in line with their speaking. The book entails that one is never too old or too young to grow as a person and achieve their dream.
I am rating this book a 4 out of 4 stars. There is a great story line that keeps the interest of the reader. The twists and turns of their adventure is carefully plotted. The detail within the book draws one in and makes them feel as though they are living through the experiences with the characters. It is a reminder that our pasts carry forward into our lives and it is our jobs to continue the legends of our ancestors for our future generations.
