The first thing that comes to mind when you see the title of this book is that it will focus on the things done by superheroes. That is the common setting of most children books. However, Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base is a little bit different. Other than focusing on superhero stuff, it focuses on helping children learn how to read while at the same time enjoying the beautiful pictures.
The book is about the duties that Toni does in his day to day life. It is a source of encouragement to kids to ensure that they help their parents and guardians with the daily house chores. Toni helps his mother to wash dishes and he even dusts the house. Other than that, he reads, swims, and eats which are daily routine things that most kids perform. He does all these things despite being a superhero thus encouraging other kids to engage in the same routines.
The book contains short and precise sentences. Huge illustrations, either one page or sometimes two pages, are used to illustrate what’s happening. This format is very likeable among young children. Even before they learn how to read the worlds, they can already relate with what is happening through the illustrations. The easily recognized words used also make the book easy to read and understand.
Superhero is an excellent choice of the main character in the book. Most kids enjoy reading books about superheroes and what they do. Children also like emulating superheroes since they believe that superheroes are awesome. I especially like the fact that the author shows that Toni is just like any other child despite his special abilities. For instance, he plays like other children without using his powers. Children love to know that they are just like their superheroes something that has been very well displayed in this book.
The rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. The book content as well as the artwork is incredible. This book appeals most to children. It could also be appealing to parents who wish to teach their young ones how to read. This book is just the first about this superhero. More books in this series are yet to be published. Therefore, readers can expect more books about Toni the Superhero.
