A friends to lover’s story filled with mystery, family, and hint of past and present scandals. One Way or Another, by Mary J. Williams is the first book in The Sisters Quartet series.

Calder Benedict, a strong independent women, is one of four Benedict sisters. This story is as much about her relationships with those sisters as it is with the alluring Adam Stone. Raised mostly by Mrs. Finch, the loving motherly housekeeper; she tends to not only keep her mother at arm’s length, but her father as well. Calder runs a very successful charity that is her pride and joy. She finds herself being helped by Adam Stone one night. Thinking that was the end of their interaction she was surprised to literally run into him the next morning. Unable to deny the attraction she agrees to dinner. Is he too good to be true? With a potential threat to her family, in the form of her mother’s new love interest. Calder may need to not only turn to Adam sooner, but trust that he can keep her secrets and help protect the Benedict girls and their fortune.

Adam Stone didn’t grow up with the same perks as Calder. In fact, the exact opposite. Having a father who died when he was younger, he was raised by a single mother in an unsafe area. He joined the Navy at 18 to make sure he stayed safe and was not brought down by his environment. While in the Navy, he was unable to protect his mother. Adam came home and tried to fix as much as he could to give back to the women who raised him. While both have put the incident behind them Adam hung onto some anger and now steps in to protect any woman he feels is in need. Lucky for him that came in handy the night he meet Calder Benedict. Constantly intrigued by her he easily sees past her money and sees the real Calder. When all the Benedict sisters involve him to help them with their mother’s new love interest, he knows he’ll do anything to keep them safe.

Calder and Adam may come from very different backgrounds, but as a reader I loved how easily they saw the truth of each other. Both of them are type A personalities, but to watch them learn how to be what the other, made this read extra special. They didn’t just change who they were or how they reacted overnight. The author made sure you were brought in to hear how their walls were breaking down, or when they realized why and how they needed to change. Knowing this is how May J. Williams writes made me automatically want to read the rest of this series, and to check out her other books as well.

I enjoyed the fact that all of the characters seemed to play an important role. That may not be obvious when you first met them, but by the end you understood. I thought it was interesting the author chose to write a prologue. It gave me a sense of the relationship between each sister, which came in handy as the story caught traction, and how they leaned on each other because of all their broken relationships with fathers and mother. The author also gave enough personality to each character. You cared about the good ones and despised the bad ones, which comes in handy when the family threat gets bigger. You now want to ready the remaining books about each sister because you actually want to know what will happen.

I give this book a 4 out of 4. While it isn’t the style of book I usually tend to read, I found it surprisingly enjoyable. There weren’t any grammar or spelling issues I noticed. The writing was fluid and it was easy to follow the story and plot. The characters were developed and detailed with great understanding. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the friends to lover’s angle, strong sister ties, a flare of mystery and a hint of drama in their books.
