Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an amazing story about a simple hiking trip that turns into a journey. This novel is filled with mystery, history, adventure, and drama. Though it may be fiction it is written so well you could imagine it as a true story.
Tom has a long-planned hiking trip with his best-friend William and his daughter Myra when he is suddenly introduced to his granddaughter Sarah. Not only did he not know he had a 13-year-old granddaughter, he had no idea he was going to be in charge of taking care of her. Not knowing whether or not to continue on his hiking trip, knowing it would be physically demanding. A census between friends was taken and they decided to continue with their plans to hike into Olympic National Park.
Sarah is a rebellious pre-teen who is virtually abandoned with a grandfather she just barely met, and then dragged onto a hiking trip with no experience. As the story unfolds Sarah disappears and a hunt begins to find her. After a long tedious search, Sarah is found and she begins to tell her companions the story of what happened. Her journey was long and filled with adventure and drama. Did it really happen or was she dreaming? A question one can only answer by reading this novel.
This book is packed full of historical details and information. As well as having an impressive amount of nautical jargon. As I read through this book I knew the author must have had some sort of nautical experience. I found myself looking up phrases to understand exactly what the author was talking about. Each time I was more and more impressed with the knowledge and use of the nautical verbiage.
Strong Heart also has impressive details about Native Americans in the Northwest and their history. Tom’s friend William is Native American and his daughter Myra is very active in the tribal community. The Native American aspects were so realistic I found myself wanting to skip to the “about the author” page so I could see if Charlie Sheldon had only done an extensive amount of research to write this book, or if he pulled from his own life experiences. After immersing myself in this wonderful book, I was pleased to read that the author indeed pulled both the Native American and nautical details of this book from his own life.
Personally, I am not one to re-read a book. I enjoy reading but find I would rather read a new book than re-read a book. However, this is one book I could enjoy over and over again. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Charlie Sheldon did an amazing job of describing not only nature to give you a mind's eye into the story, but he also did a great job of writing in such a way you could put yourself in the shoes of all the main characters. I will gladly read this book over and over again. I feel each time I read it I will learn and retain something new.
