A Serendipity Mysterythe sixth offering in RF Kristi’s popular Snoopy Cat series, sends the title character to investigate a theft from a museum in Sri Lanka. The international feeling is a unique aspect to this series, especially in books for young children, which, in my experience, tend to stick to the tried-and-true for themes. The cats (and dog) of the Inca Detective Agency visit tea plantations and temples as well as white-sand beaches. Along the way, they meet a mother and baby elephant, and Inca escapes a fearsome python. While solving the mystery is the immediate goal, and Inca shows real courage in doing that, I think the real message of this series is not to fear what is different and to explore a lot.

That’s not to say there isn’t anything familiar about the style of the book. It is characterized by simple language, and written as if from Inca’s journal. The illustrations are charming, but in my e-reader, slightly blurred because my model has never been great with graphics. I saw enough to recommend them and think they are cute, though, with a nice balance between realistic and anthropomorphic styles. Personally, I’ve never fully outgrown the pull of a talking-animal story, and I suspect I’m not alone, despite children’s publishers’ occasional complaints about the form.

Style is crisp and well-edited, with few to no errors. Although I’m not a parent, I’d describe this book as good for early grades, or possibly a younger child might enjoy being read this out loud. I could envision amusement arising from a brave caretaker being willing to attempt the animals’ voices. I wonder if the series could be an audio-book sometime since in some ways it seems like a natural fit. If someone is feeling really grand, perhaps it could be adapted for a television special or children’s home video.

Sometimes, as even a volunteer reviewer, it seems to me as though I don’t do my job if I don’t have some quibble or contrary read to get my word count u or provoke a lot of clicks or commentary. In that sense, this book is a challenge, because it does a deceptively simple job well and doesn't leave me a lot to argue about.

Despite the lack of drama it gives this review, I give Serendipity Mystery 4 out of 4 stars, because people who are good at their jobs make the work look easy.
