McDowell by William H. Coles is a work of literary fiction with well-built dramatic situations that stimulate thought about a certain human condition. This exemplary novel focuses on both strength and weaknesses of the characters. The author was able to present a story on how the characters grow and change, and how they reach their goals or fail to. There are different themes that can be observed such as love, courage, greed, redemption, and perseverance. The ambivalent feelings and emotions keep the readers engaged throughout the story.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part is about the achievement of the main character while the second part focuses on his descending journey of life. This story follows, Hiram who is commended as a dexterous surgeon with a perfect life. Being a founder, a leader and on his account of notable achievements, he takes great pride of himself. He becomes deceitful and greedy to the power. He is not good enough for any kind of relationships, especially to his daughters. The series of events of Hiram’s life gives him both pleasure and pain. His decisions and choices help him to grow and change how he lives in his life.
The author provides a great experience to the reader from reading the novel. He successfully achieved to write a protagonist who is highly developed and complex. The tones of the story are serious, painful, sincerity, love, emotional and thrilling. There are thought-provoking scenes that make a reader turn on immediately the next page. There also some parts that may contain some explicit scene about sex, suicide, and abuse that you should be aware of.
I like the most about this book is how it can bring a catharsis to any reader. Hiram accomplishes a great way to involve the readers from his behavior, actions, and experiences. He can encourage the readers to discourage by making things complicated. The story is professionally edited and well-written. It hits the emotional quotient of the reader, and it maintains the connection between the characters and the reader.
I rate McDowell 4 out of 4 stars. The clear description of the customs, culture, and tradition of some places was also emphasized by the author. I would highly endorse this for those people who love character-based story, suspense and self-discovery books. It hits the emotional quotient of the reader, and it maintains the connection between the characters and the reader. It helps us to see that the true redemption is seized when you accept the future consequences for your past mistakes.
