McDowell by William H. Coles is a work of fiction that presents a conspicuous well-written story about certain circumstances of a person. This impeccable novel focuses on the holistic development of the characters. The mixed feeling and emotions make it so engaging to the readers. The author was able to include elements such as thoughts, actions, words, and choices to this exceptional novel. The different themes from the book create a unifying experience for any readers.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the accomplishments of the protagonist while the second part centers on his life being drag down. The main character is Hiram who is a remarkable surgeon with a successful life. However, being too much proud of himself became a seed which grows into arrogance. He becomes unscrupulous and possessive to power. Hiram made a lot of mistakes in his life but these mistakes turn him into something better than he was before. What are the challenges that Hiram faced? Will he acknowledge his mistakes? How will he correct his mistakes in life?
The author successfully comes up with a riveting novel about character development. It can bring a lot for experiences to the reader. The characters are so relatable and absorbing. But there are some explicit scenes that every reader should be aware of such as abuse and sex. This book is a good page-turner and thrilling. The tones of the story are pessimistic and optimistic, serious, threatening and subjective.
Hiram fulfills a considerable way to involve the readers in his story. He managed to be reflective on the way he behaves, he acts and he thinks. The story is well-written, and the structure of the plot was analyzed carefully. I like the most about this book is how it emphasizes the traits of all its characters especially Sophie, who is a great person, optimistic and very realistic.
I rate McDowell 4 out of 4 stars. I like how the author entails the different culture and traditions from different places. I would highly recommend this book to those who like character development story, and about the life of a person. There are a lot of moral lessons that this book can give to the readers. Every one of us is capable of making mistakes at the same correcting those mistakes. Sometimes in life, we cannot become what we want by remaining what we are. There some things that happened uncontrollably but we can do something about it when we change the way we act, we think and the way we treat other.
