Toni the Superhero
Written by R.D. Base and Illustrated by Debbie Hefke

Does your child need a role model? Toni the Superhero shows his readers exactly what he enjoys doing during his free time. From helping out around the house and community, to eating a well-balanced meal, or just having a good time with friends; Toni enjoys being a regular respectable kid. Toni the superhero is a phenomenal book written by R.D. Base, which is also filled with vibrant and engaging illustrations from the front to the back of the book illustrated by Debbie Hefke.

This eye-opener was published in March 2018 in online and in print form. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars **** because of its positive development of phonological awareness early in life; by the authors use of repetitive sentences that allow small children to read along and the descriptive illustrations that allows children to understand Toni’s actions. For example, a family can read this book to their infants, read along with their toddlers and preschoolers, until one day their school aged children are reading to them. This is a great book for bonding.

As parents, we want the best for our children. But, who knew reading repetitive structured stories as well as narratives can develop phonological awareness in children from birth to adolescence. By reading aloud and pointing to the words that are being pronounced, help children identify syntax (the way words are formed together to create phrases). For example, the author uses “Toni likes” before every action:

"Toni likes to read"
"Toni likes to swim"
"Toni likes to help"
"Toni likes to sweep"

In the illustrations, the geometric shapes allow the colors to jump off the page to intrigue the reader. The geometric shapes and colors throughout the book, also gives parents an option to point out and ask what colors and shapes their child sees. Every page is a conversational piece children can learn from. The book is free of grammatical errors indicating it was well-edited.

In conclusion, the author provides parents and children with a book children can grow with from infancy to school-aged beginner readers. The proof is in the pudding, you can not harm your kids by reading to them, but positive effects are guaranteed when reading is done continuously. When books are introduced to children early, it gives their brain a jumpstart on being phonologically aware. Overall, this book can easily become your child’s next favorite story to read at storytime.
