India in Chaos: Only Judiciary Can Save by K. C. Agrawal is a non-fictional work which examines the bad state of India's socio-political atmosphere. It states the problem in part 1. Part 2 examines the constitution likening it to its counterparts in other countries, and the last part gives a recommendation of what the author thinks would take India out of the doldrums.

The author explores a topic which is common to every underdeveloped country, and this makes the work so relevant to contemporary times. The expression of problems in the beginning chapters shows that the author is very much present and aware of what transpires in India, and has a first-hand information about the socio-political imbalance.

There is no doubt every society that exists on this kind of fate will one day collapse. And there is also no doubt the author is very much concerned about this. A clear proof of his concern is the constant lamentation of India's misfortunes even after 70; years of self-rule throughout the work. I also agree that some of these problems are so serious and heart-breaking.

A good example is the one that scared me the most, the inability of a public officer who had attended school and works at the Supreme Court to write '4 copies received' correctly. He wrote '4 copey resevied' instead.

The author frowns at quotas, reservations, dole-outs, charities, relief and other forms of unnecessary help from the government which produce laxity, regression and harms the economy.

The social life in India is a total mess such that infrastructures are in a ramshackle and dilapidated state. Human rights are only on papers, despite the fact that the constitution upholds it. For a state like India, with the second largest population in the world, such problems cannot be avoided especially if corruption is the order of the day and management of resources is very poor.

Agrawal blames it on the executive and legislators whom he referred to as guardians of the government, he opines that the judiciary is the only body that would salvage India.

I would like to say the judiciary is only an institution with people who are also believed to be elites. Therefore, they may not necessarily solve the entire problems India is facing. This problem needs to be approached from the grassroots upwards, and from every angle just as the author explained it on page 289-290.

Even though he so much believes in the judiciary, he did not point out the limitations, method and techniques this judiciary will employ to check India's problems and provide a lasting solution.

The work is professionally arranged, the preliminary pages of the book gives you a clear insight into what you are about to read. The three parts of the book are arranged perfectly so that the first part critically examines the problem, the second explores the constitution of India alongside others, and the third part gives recommendations to the problems earlier discussed. This is incredible!

What I like most about the book is how the author summarised the entire book in the story of a son, his dying father and the wise man in just few lines on page 181-182.

What I dislike is the use of unclear terms like crore, lac, etc. Not every reader will understand this. Indians will understand fast and better. The book contains a few typos which can only be noticed by a careful reader.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it will go a long way in providing a comprehensive information to Indians about where they all came from, and where they are heading. I recommend this book to all Indians. They need to go through it and do something for their fatherland.
