In Pursuit of The Pale Prince by Mark Wallace is a fantasy novel that is set in a time and place where life is about survival and peace is fragile.
Arestus is still a boy when his father dies, but he is suddenly thrust into a dangerous mission. His task is to take an ancient crown to the Pale Prince of the Northern Kingdom. If he succeeds, war between the Southern Lands and the Northern Kingdoms could be avoided and peace restored.
The journey is dangerous as many enemies want to prevent him from succeeding, and the lands he passes through are wild and unforgiving. However, he does have help along the way from his travelling companions, and together they face wolves, bounty hunters and the Western Wastes.
This is a short, fast-moving novel, which has been well written. Mark Wallace has a way of describing the scene that captures the imagination. I really enjoyed reading about the different lands that Arestus passed though, and the sense of ancient history and traditions that were woven into the story. Despite this being a fairly short book, Mark Wallace was able to bring the fantasy world to life and make it very believable.
The book has some great characters. It is written through the eyes of Arestus, but we also get to know his travelling companion, Cirin, and others along the way. Their back stories are cleverly woven through the book, giving depth to the characters and an understanding of their choices and emotions.
Books about long journeys can sometimes become monotonous, but this one was not as there was always something going on, such as fighting off wolves, trying to avoid being caught by enemies and meeting new people.
In Pursuit of The Pale Prince would be enjoyed by young adults and anyone who enjoys a story of courage and adventure. It is a fantasy novel but the world described is not so different from our own so don’t let that put you off if you don’t normally read this genre.
I did find a couple of grammar and spelling errors in the text, but they did not detract from the enjoyment of reading the book, and overall the book has been well-edited. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written adventure story with inspiring characters. I cannot think of anything I would change about this book.
