I would give Final Notice by Van Fleisher a rating of 4 stars out of 4 stars. I had my hesitations about reading this book, however it was very well written. The issues were presented in a way that kept hold of my interest and I wanted to read further. Mortality, gun violence, and gun ownership were faced with the added element of involving the elderly in the story. The issues were current to events happening around the world in today’s society right now.

People wear watches that keep track of their steps, email, texts, and heart rate currently in our society. A final Notice program is frightening believable boldly facing mortality. Questions arise when facing whether a couple of months or just a week to live; what might a person (possibly an elderly person) do? Then adding the possibility of that person owning a gun or guns to an unsettling situation. What if the person becomes suicidal being angry with his situation and the world. Other lives might be endangered of being lost with a person who may have a nothing to lose attitude. Troubling times and situations are faced boldly throughout the author’s story. I questioned my own feelings and how people in my life might react when faced with what Vince and others had in the book. The psychological aspects just mentioned made the reading at times very emotional.

I adored Trudi and Vince, the elderly couple in the book and their friends. The community and the relationships there in added a great deal to the storyline. The issues were discussed among the characters. Trudi and Vince as a couple even researched and discussed the issues together. I really appreciated that about these characters in this book.

I hated that their friend, Rasha went through so much to be treated the way she was by her job. I felt horrible for the school staff and families, but horrified about what happens to Rasha. Although it seemed to be true to how current society treats people. The ones who actually care and do their job get treated unfairly.

I enjoyed the book Final Notice . I would recommend it to a mature audience due to the graphic violence discussed. A mature reader would be needed to deal appropriately with the emotional aspect involved with contemplating these controversial topics.
