Otherside written by Aaron Dennis is a fictional novel based on the fictitious version of Voodoo, Adja is the main character in this book, he coincidentally got himself entangled in the world of Voodoo while celebrating in New Orleans with his friend in the real-estate business who just got a new business deal. Adja witnessed a murder of a Shadowman while going to get more liquor, then the man's mojo goes into him, then he became a Shadowman. Adja was taught the fundamentals of Voodoo by the victim's grandmother, an old Creole woman in other to protect himself and avenge the death of her grandson.
His mentor and master Bear granted Adja his follower a tremendous task of finding allies among other Shadowbeings and tracking down Dire Wolf a ghost spirit. Adja was also faced with the task of finding Bear who was missing, at the expense of his own life. He was lured into making a pact with a spirit who threatened to snatched his body in exchange.
The story emphasized on the triviality of what most men crave for like instantaneous pleasures, which brings no lasting benefit. I consider it intriguing encountering such ideology in a book, which makes it possible to delve into an imaginary realm when reading this novel. I like the fact that the story is full of suspense, and it is action packed.
Written in the first person point of view it makes it easier to figuratively put myself in Adja's shoes, which seems as if I am the one embarking on an imaginary adventure. The write-ups of the book showed that the writer had a wide range of audiences in mind, because it is easy to understand. Even those that haven't heard anything about Voodoo before can easily assimilate the story line.
The characters showed some level of discipline, self-sacrificing spirit and courage which is worthy of imitation in the real world. Though some plot in the story are too abstract to understand for those that don't have basic knowledge about the ideology presented in the book, but I think the overall storyline seems easy to understand.
The fact that I can't find any error in this book shows that it is professionally edited. The book is fully immersing from the first page to the last page therefore I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. This book would be most especially fascinating for those that like to see the world from a distinctive standpoint.
