Elvis Blue by Lee Roberts is an intriguing, well edited novel about a group of teenagers that are part of the unfortunately named South Hillsborough Investigation Team. I'm a horror fanatic so I'm usually quite wary of mysteries and thrillers. However, this book exceeded my expectations and actually surprised me!

It begins in 1970 and gives us a backstory about a man named Josiah Simmons. He's been accused of murdering several women and children in the town. The snippet is only a few pages long and then begins the first chapter. Jumping into present day with a nice transition, Elvis Blue is a 16 year old boy who spends his birthday with his friend Monk. They gather up their ghost hunting gear and head to the Simmons house, supposedly haunted by Josiah Simmons. Tagging along is Maria, an almost 17 year old girl who seems to get on Elvis's nerves. Throughout the first few chapters, we get to know Elvis and what his life is like. He doesn't have many friends, his father is an alcoholic, and he's very passionate about being a "professional ghost hunter". Roberts does an amazing job switching between Elvis's story to Detective Manny Palmero's. This story isn't just about some kids wanting to see a ghost, this story is about the baffling murders of Phil Epps and Ricky LaRue.

I really enjoyed this book targeted toward young adults, particularly because the ending was utterly unexpected and caught me completely off guard. It's rare to find an exceptionally good book that is not only a murder mystery but a ghost story all in one. It's filled with tension and suspense but it is also humorous and sweet. We get to see Elvis developing new friendships and mending an old relationship. I couldn't find a way to relate myself to Elvis but I still ended up caring about him, wanting him to succeed and be happy. Roberts draws you in, gets you to fall in love with his characters and never want to stop reading. I finished this book over the span of a day or two. I found myself still awake in the middle of the night, still reading this book and trying to rack my brain to figure out how it would end.

Due to the uncanny ability to keep you on your toes, I'd give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys a page turner mystery. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to someone who wants to read a story solely about ghosts because this story has a lot to do with the mysterious murders happening in their town.
