Van Fleisher’s Final Notice is a fast-paced novel that deals with the issue of gun control. In this novel there is technology that can give you an accurate estimate of when you are going to die. This technology is in the form of a fitness watch and is marketed towards the elderly. When the owners of these watches receive their ‘Final Notice’ they are able to decide how they want to use their final days on earth. Some opt for suicide to escape their painful reality. Others chose to make sure their affairs are in order. Other still take the time to get revenge on those who have wronged them in some way.

In this novel, the NRA is going strong and has created a discount for senior citizens wishing to purchase a gun. This novel highlights the extent to which the American society values guns and how the NRA has taken the Second Amendment to the extreme. It is not only paints a terrifying picture, but brings up political points that most people are uncomfortable discussing unless surrounded by like-minded individuals. This books tackles gun control, racism, and bigotry while still providing an excellent narrative.

My favorite part of this novel was the way the political details were woven into the story. It did not feel like I was reading a political manifesto as many politically motivated books seem to be. Fleisher did an excellent job of weaving in political commentary without shoving it down the reader’s throat. It was also done in a respectful, civilized way that shows a real maturity in his writing style.

The only thing I disliked about this novel was the change of point of view. This novel jumped from person to person, which helped to progress the plot, however at times it felt like overkill. I think Fleisher was trying to provide multiple viewpoints, but it was a little confusing at times because it jumped so often. This was my only issue with the otherwise outstanding novel, and even this was only a slight hindrance to enjoying this novel.

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a fun read that still manages to leave the reader with ideas to ponder. It is also beautifully edited with almost no mistakes. I believe that anyone looking for a thrilling novel would enjoy this book. It is realistic and paints a picture of modern-day society that is eye-opening and leaves you thinking about the American society and how it functions today.
