Seven at Two Past Five by Tara Basi is the story of Abi. She is referred to as Seven by those around her. A button maker whose daily life is bogged down by routine. Abi’s work brings her delight, but her nightlife is plagued by the terrors. One day all that seems to change. She awakes after a glorious night of no terrors, but little does she know her day is about to be turned topsy-turvy. Her usual days of solitude are now replaced by quirky characters and scenes. The lack of terrors while a source of joy to her has caused disturbance to the world around her.
Abi’s first encounter with other people is not joyous. She is accused of “Disturbance Potential” and the judgment handed down is a return of the terrors. A judgment that Abi rejects so she begins her appeals process. The process is overrun by unfair treatment and ridiculous hurdles. Her everyday simple life is thrown in disarray. She begins her journey to find justice. Along the way, she is able to face her fears and uncover new truths.
Seven at Two Past Five by Tara Basi is an incredibly strange story full of twists and turns. The reader’s perspective is more of an audience member. As I read it, I felt like I was watching a play. The author brings to life these crazy characters. Abi moves from her ordinary day to day life to this weird and ridiculous path to get an appeal. This is a fantastic story that made me laugh. I got caught up in Abi’s frustration at the absolute absurdity of her experiences. The author’s description of the characters and the different surroundings is amazing. It’s not over the top, so the reader is able to connect with the story. The reader is not overwhelmed with too much detail.
What I loved about the book the most were the characters. They were unique and their peculiar qualities only aided the story. Abi is a relatable character. I was able to connect with her frustrations. This book is not an easy read, but it is an interesting read. This world that the author creates keeps you glued to your seat until the last page. There was humor in every scene and character. The story may seem ridiculous, but I think it reminiscent of the justice systems in my country. The crazy obstacles that one needs to overcome to be heard or get a fair trial are just as ridiculous.
Personally, there was little to dislike about the book. The story's somewhat complex nature may make it unappealing. A reader will either love it or hate it. I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well written and edited. The author does a great job of bringing this story to life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is intrigued by bizarre and funny stories. Any reader who is looking for stories that hold deeper meaning will love this book. The storyline might seem a little crazy, but it definitely gets you thinking.
