Superhighway is a fantastic novel. The story told by Alex Fayman cannot be categorized into a single genre. All throughout the novel there are science fiction, romance, mystery, and thriller elements. Covering so many types of writing can be difficult, but Mr. Fayman pulls it off seamlessly. This is the kind of story that keeps the reader at the edge of their seat.
The story follows the life of Alex Fine, a very smart eighteen-year-old with the amazing ability to travel through the Internet. However, his supernatural abilities do not stop there. He can also mess around with any data found on the Internet. Alex wants to use his newly found powers for the good of mankind. The main character essentially becomes a modern-day Robin Hood. Unfortunately for Alex Fine, stealing from the rich and corrupt to give to the poor isn’t as easy and safe as it may seem on paper.
The thing I liked best about Superhighway was the protagonist, Alex Fine. To me, he made a perfect main character. He is a very likable, clever, and strong-willed young man, whose only wish in life is to make the world better for the less fortunate. He has an interesting backstory that pulls on your heartstrings. Alex is by no means a perfect human, but his flaws make him more enduring and relatable. There were also a lot of elements in Alex’s personality that reminded me of my own, especially from when I was about the same age.
I didn’t like how long it took for the story to draw me in. When I first started the novel, it was boring and I had to force myself to keep reading. I didn’t find myself wanting to continue until I reached Chapter 7 or Chapter 8. It took another two chapters for before I was truly invested in the story and all the characters (not just Alex).
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It has been one of the best novels I have read so far this year. Although it had a slow start, it ended up really captivating me with its characters and unique mix of genres. Superhighway is a great novel and relatively a quick read. I would highly recommend it to anyone, as long as they were okay with adult concepts such as drugs, sex, alcohol, and violence. I look forward to continuing Alex’s story in Superhighway 2.
