McDowell, by William H. Coles, is a twist and turn-taking novel that keeps the reader on their toes throughout the entire book. It chronicles the life of a man named Hiram McDowell and follows all his ups and downs. As soon as you think you know what is going on with him, his story takes a drastic turn. Also, within Hiram's story, the lives of his three biological children, Ann, Sophie and Billie, are included. Paige, a journalist, as well as many other characters, including Hiram's other family members and friends, new and old, contribute a great deal to different parts of Hiram's journey in this book.

What I liked most about this book was its unpredictability and the high level of drama. I was confident I knew what this story was going to be about and who Hiram was up until I read closer to part two. All of the sudden, Hiram's situation changed in very unexpected ways. All the way through part two, there were many twists and turns I did not see coming.

The aspect I disliked the most about this book was Hiram's personality. I found him misogynistic and lacking empathy. Even though he did not seem like the greatest person from the very beginning, his later actions still astounded me. Who and how Hiram is in this book is not who I would personally consider a moral person. I do, however, understand that it is an aspect invaluable to the story.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The story line was captivating and intriguing. The characters were all tied in with each other, even when it was unexpected. The book was also very well-edited as I was not able to spot an error. If there were any errors, that would have been the one element to lower my rating.

Any adult who likes reading unpredictable and dramatic books would be my recommended audience. It is full of adventure, travel, scandal and drama. Anyone who enjoys any of the previously listed subjects would enjoy this book. There is no romance, comedy or fantasy, so if that is what a reader is looking for, this book is not for them. It is a look at a man's life who is straightforward, blunt and does whatever he wants according to his own truths. Unfortunately, Hiram ends up receiving the same kind of treatment from another egotistical and absolute thinking person. It is up to the reader to decide if it is deserved or not.
