Sometimes changes need to be experienced by the individual rather than being told or explained. These are my feelings about that.

Conner is complex. He should be in a novel of this size. At the beginning of the novel, there were things that had to be told or explained but that changed within the first few chapters. Then, the experiences of Conner which slowly (but not inevitably) led him to alternately accept and reject expectations of him made for a good story without an external explanatory narrator.
