I love sci Fi and fantasy. Probably 80% of the books I read. I unfortunately have not read Anne Rice but definitely on my to do list. I feel like books like Twilight have unfortunately ruined vampire books for a lot of people my age (28). I feel like there is something magical if done correctly

I used to LOVE them! They were one of my favorite subject matters. However, after being immersed in Vampire tales of all sorts, I find that the truly memorable ones are the bad guys. Truly evil, the kind that give you nightmares. I tend to absorb those and remember the books much more than the same old misunderstood vampire who doesn't want to be a vampire or the vegan vampires or family types that are trying to protect the coven, etc. Just my personal preference

I can't say vampire stories are my go-to thing. I like the idea of them, I just haven't bothered to read any. I have read Dracula, but that was years ago (way back in high school), and I found it a bit dull. I guess since then I just haven't bothered to pick up any more. That's not to say I have anything against them, it's more that I just haven't really tried to sink my teeth (or fangs, in this case) into them.

I grew out of them and much other 'fantasy' stuff some years ago. For me, there are still too many books that deal with real things to read.

The supernatural are always fun to read about, as long as the plots aren't exactly the same or even too similar. I myself prefer werewolves, witches, and demons to vampires because the thought of someone biting into my neck always make me shudder. Plus, I've yet to find a vampire series that I like, which why I'm loving this thread! I'm not really into horror, so I lean toward romances with a bit of action in them.

This thread has inspired me to read more of the old vampire stories. I just finished Carmilla, and it was pretty interesting. I've found a couple more.

For those who like vampires as the bad guys, check out Afterage by Yvonne Navarro. It's like The Walking Dead with vampires.

I have to be very intrigued by the overall plot to truly enjoy a vampire book since the Twilight series came out. It feels as though for a while authors felt that having a vampire and a love triangle was enough to have a great book and so I avoided reading them for a while. Slowly, I'm looking more and more at them, in hopes of finally finding that one book that'll respark my enjoyment for them.

I have read The Dracula and the Twilight series and I loved both. I do enjoy supernatural stories, especially the ones involving mythical creatures. However, I think it depends on how it is written. The Dracula is a classic and one of my favorites. The twilight series as a story was very interesting a gripping with lots of action. But I'm not sure how I would feel about teen drama vampire stories, I'm afraid I may find them childish.

Different people have a different take on the vampire genre, some take inspiration from the old legends and some put a more modern twist on the old classics, for example the Twilight Saga and The Vampire Diaries. In the Twilight Saga the vampires sparkle like diamonds and have diamond hard skin, there werewolves shift at will and are about the size of a horse if not bigger. This is a more modern take on the old stories that we grew up with.

The Vampire Diaries are more closely linked to the legends, they can be injured, a wooden stake to the heart will kill them permanently (but to be honest a stake to the heart will kill anything) they cannot procreate. There werewolves have no control over their transformations and are the size of regular wolves more closely linked to the stories.

While both the classic and the modern takes on the genre have their merits I personally prefer the more classic image of the supernatural creatures. The vampire who hide in the shadows because they burn rather than because they sparkle.

The Keep by F. Paul Wilson is probably my favorite in the "vampire" genre. It really has an old world feel to it throughout the novel.

I think vampire stories can feel new and interesting, but it's all about the method of delivery. The author has to work in which known vampire characteristics his character has, share something new that unique to his book, and do it in such a way that is interesting to read. Because vampires have been done so much, it is definitely a harder subject to approach. Still, it is definitely still doable.

I enjoy vampire stories very much. I think it's important for every author to create a character that suits their story. There are so many options when you are a writer. I enjoy an author that is brave enough to step out of the shadows of Bram Stoker's Dracula and create a new monster !

Dracula was one of my favorite books ever. After I read it, I couldn't go to the toilet in the dark for a week (for my husband's joy). I loved Twilight just as much, for completely opposite reasons. Then, to me, it was enough. Maybe I got sick of the vampire overexposure, but it seems like there's nothig else but wampires and werewolves. I juess I'd give a book a chance, but the blurb has to be really good for me to get over my -probably misplaced- distrust to the genre.

My favorite author is J. R. Ward and she write the black dagger brotherhood series. I love these books. They give a new light to vampire novels. They are paranormal romance novels but also have a great story plot.
