Yeah! Good vs Evil is an old topic, but I still love watching Good win over Evil.

I agree that it can become predictable, but some of the best and most read books has the same underlying theme. I think a great author with a good idea can always make this theme work.

I sometimes enjoy books where evil tends to win. Makes it unpredictable and very interesting. It also gives life to the book that you are reading. Good won't always win and that is a fact, that is just how life is

I prefer the "shades of gray" approach to things, much like what Martin had done in A Song of Ice and Fire. I like books where the lines between good and evil are blurred, plunging the reader in a state of moral dilemma...or something like that.

I think the theme of good vs. evil can be interpreted interesting ways. When its an internal conflict the character is having about doing something wrong to make things right, or even when the character ends up being seen as evil when he/she started out wanting to make a positive difference but lost their way. It doesn't necessarily have to be a noble, faultless team of heroes battling pure evil after all!

Wars have been waged with loss of life an inevitable consequence but each side may be fighting to protect who they love so can we call either one evil? Would you kill to save a life? It's a tough question for anyone.

I usually root for the villains in books with this theme, however, Raven's Peak is really talking about the true evil and the true good so I wasn't able to see the point in defending the bad guys here. Good VS. Evil is such a cliche theme and the downfall is that you always know good will always win in the end.

In real life good doesn't always prevail so its much more satisfying when good prevails in fiction at least.

Even though we read a lot of stories about the classic Good vs Evil theme, and I mean it when I say a lot! I never get bored of the stories and never seem to have outgrown them. Even if we know how the story will turn out we never tend to put the book down and always have an air of satisfaction when we finish it.

I think it's the adventure that matters to how the predictable end is achieved. At the same time, I do like stories with an anti-hero or an anti-villain.

I agree with you. This book was exactly the same. It was predictable in many ways.

Good vs Evil...hmm we all like to see the so-called good side win but the reality is that we're all a mix of greys, nothing and no one is black and white. Frankly, I would prefer the anti-hero kicking arse because he or she stands up against wrong-doing and would be more believable.

We do always assume that “good” will prevail. Many books, TV shows, and movies that are supposed to be suspenseful aren’t because when the author sets the up this way you already know who is going to win.

There’s a very thing line separating these two concepts and that could change depending who’s perspective we are seeing the line through.
