The saying goes "Dont judge a book by its cover"...but a lot of people still do that. Same with titles - people see titles like "Superhighway" and wonder what it means, and so, some titles are more alluring than others. Some dismiss books on titles alone - how many dozens of variations of "Top Ten Ways to Lose Weight" have we all read and ignored? But the reverse can be said with the edgy, tense titles that can grip and pull us in.

What makes a title special for you? What are your favorite and least favorite titles?

What qualities does a good title have in your opinion? Any thoughts on this book's title or any recent book's titles you've read?

EDIT: To clarify, I mean your favorite title, but not necessarily your favorite book.

Funnily enough for me, the title does less than the cover. Logically, names like Harry Potter and the _____ wouldn't appeal to me because it sounds generic, but the covers are intriguing and I really love the original artwork. But I do love it when books in a series match up, like this series: A Thousand Pieces of You, Ten Thousand Skies Above You, A Million Worlds With You

Superhighway title is one of my favorites because it is catching and it makes one to wonder and try to think of things related to it.

I love the title, A thousand splendid suns.

I love the title, A thousand splendid suns.

A good title can catch me.

One of my favorites is Every Heart a Doorway.
Another one would be Where the Heart Is.

Hmmm...I'm sensing a theme here.
Not intentional, but I'll go with it.

A title can among other things either give away suspense or arouse interest in a book. I can't point to any title as my favourite as at now but I think one-word titles are masterful. To summarise one's thoughts and feelings in a catchy phrase is brilliant but to capture all that in a single word is genius!

Franz Kafka's The metamorphasis is a curious, unique, and unforgettable title of a novella.

Me, too! I am easily swayed by packaging (hehe) that I would be inclined to buy books with good cover print. It's the first thing I see while walking, only then would I consider if it looks like it fits with the title.

I get attracted towards specific titles which seems alluring .. My favourite book's title is Hus Hush . Without saying much , it provokes excitement in me .

My favourite title is Our Lady of the Lowriders - it has a memorable cadence and I like the contrast it suggests. I can't remember the cover, though. Usually, I like to see beautiful cover art - I know the whole jazz about not judging the quality of the book by its cover, but I find that if the budget for the book allows for really stunning art, it's a story worth reading.

For me, it's not only just the title, but also the book cover. If they both coincide well, and if the book emanates something dark and mysterious, then of course I would give it a read. But if the title is too preppy, or too revealing of what's going on, or even something incredibly cheesy, then I'd more than likely skip over it. Moreover, if the title is cringeworthy, such as "Hot Werewolf Moon Sex", then I'm definitely not going to give the book another look. Unless of course, I'm being threatened at gun point, or I'm so bored I don't know what to do with my life.

For me this is the kind of title that makes me want to read the book

The Rainmaker by John Grisham

For me, in order to decide whether I read a book or not is a combination of reading the title, the review, and also paying attention to its cover. Nevertheless, I do consider that some titles are more appealing than others. For instance, when I read the title Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan, it immediately caught my attention, and I enjoyed the book, but when I read the title By the River Piedra I sat Down and Wept by Paulo Cohelo, I considered it was dull; however, it was a wonderful book.
