Perhaps Wilde was doing a satirical take-off of some other work popular at the time. It's the reason I can imagine for Wilde to write such schmaltz.

Kinky Friedman's The Christmas Pig: A Fable ends similarly. Kinky proves a master storyteller, alike to Oscar, with his soulful little book.

I don't think I've ever read anything by Wilde that I didn't like. His prose and characterization are brilliant, and it doesn't matter if he's writing for children, or for adults, his writing style adapts to the audience.

this is good read, I feel very sad that Oscar Wilde could not get the fame that he deserved, unfortunately because of being homosexual he was discriminated against by the people in his times.

oscar wilde was a great author who had the capability to show trivial of human emotions in such beautiful words that his stories can touch our hearts even after a century.
