I don't read about overly foreign places often, but Colin Martin's "Welcome to Hell" is an exceptionally good book, which takes place in Thailand.

I love reading about places that I haven't visited before because reading about these places makes it feel like I'm there. When an author describes a location I immediately start painting the image in my mind. So, as the story proceeds, I feel like I am in that location myself. That I think is the entire magic of reading a book, its ability to transport the reader to another place, even if they've never seen it before. :techie-studyinggray:

I enjoy reading about places I have never been because it really requires me to use my imagination. I live in a small farming community, so reading about different places, cultures, and people really help open up the world for me. My favorite author is Wanda Brunsetter. I enjoy her books because I love reading about the Amish lifestyle and their environment.

i like it when the author describes those places well, it makes you feel as though you are there physically, makes you want to to go there someday. If researched well the books can give you real insight into a different culture and different way of life.

I definitely love reading about far away places cause it makes me want to visit them. But I love it even more when they write with so much description in the past at a place I've already been to, when it looked completely different.

My trip to Adele is a good book. The author clearly puts an imagination in my mind about the places l can only dream of being there. Examples include Rome and the Sin city Las Vegas. I still cant get rid of the imaginations

Yes, I do because when the book is well written and descriptive it transports the mind and gives an illusion that you're actually there.

Amagine wrote:In My Trip to Adele, one of the things that I liked about the book was the different settings the story took place in and the description of them. The authors vividly described the scenery of Rome, Jordan and even Las Vegas. All of these are places I've never been before.

So what about you? Do you like reading books that describe places you've never seen or been before? Why? What kind of feeling does it evoke in you?

Bonus Question: What's your favorite book that depicts a place foreign to you?
I find it very educating to read about places I ve never been to as it gives me a better insight of people and culture.

I often like going to awesome places and then reading about them (or even seeing them on TV). I went to Europe this summer and now I'm looking to read maybe a historical fiction based in Russia or Sweden or Poland! They were such wonderful places to visit!

Definitely! It gives me an idea of how beautiful other places can be and how diverse and dramatically different it is to be in another place other than my own.

I love to read about new places and places that I already have been! If it is described vividly enough in the novel I can picture what it would be like to be there in that place and time. I cannot remember any specific book, but whenever a novel mentions a place I love to picture what it would be like to be there!

Yes I do. It provides me first an insight on what are the attractions in that place and what to expect to find in that place. It lets you know the history and culture.

Yes, I do but depends on the capability of the writer to describe the beauty of the place, skillfully through his/her words.

I sure do, such books tend give you an imaginative experience of places you've never seen before and equally gives you the chance to say one or two things about such places.
