Yes. But even more so if they can bring the food to life by describing what makes it different in a way that I can understand despite never having experienced it. Tough to pull off.

This is one of my favorite ways to get to know a place before traveling there... sometimes stories in books can make a location come alive in a way that other types of research don't accomplish.

Yeah! Because if the description is vivid and enticing then, I will definitely want to visit the place.
As for the bonus question: I'm not a fan of Canada but, how Sid Marty describes the wilderness therein in 'Men for the Mountains' is just superb.

Absolutely! You learn so much about the place and can get a sense and a feel for it. I think reading inspires people to travel and allows those who can't to imagine it. I love historical fiction especially because it allows me to time travel.

Amagine wrote:In My Trip to Adele, one of the things that I liked about the book was the different settings the story took place in and the description of them. The authors vividly described the scenery of Rome, Jordan and even Las Vegas. All of these are places I've never been before.

So what about you? Do you like reading books that describe places you've never seen or been before? Why? What kind of feeling does it evoke in you?

Bonus Question: What's your favorite book that depicts a place foreign to you?
I enjoy reading books set in a different location especially when the authors are as descriptive as the author of this novel was. It makes it easier to picture the setting. It evokes feelings of curiosity, excitement, and adventure for me. In reference to your bonus question, I have a hard time picking. One that really sticks out to me though is a trilogy I read featured in England. Most of the setting was in Oxford but later was moved to the countryside.

I do, so long as it's well written. I usually am not so interested in descriptions of a place as much as information on what the culture is like, what there is to do, what the environment is. Pictures I can find easily and they will give me more information than the vast majority of descriptions.

I think that this is part of the magic of reading. There are very few of us who are privileged enough to travel the world and reading / literature is able to transport, teach, and inspire us about the things that exist outside of our reality. Bonus answer... the Island of Monte Cristo!!!

I wouldn't say I particularly like reading about real places as I prefer book laden with impossibilities like floating houses or flying cars and other realms. I however do not mind when they a well put enough to envision them as I read.

Yes, it is the part that I enjoyed most in the book. It is what makes your imagination that you can keep to yourself. In reading them, it gives you an idea about the particular place. What is the good thing about it and its hotspots that you can visit. It first give you an insight on where to go and the part that you can share to your loved ones as well.
