While I have felt a lot of respect for an author of a book which I liked, I have never really felt close to them. Even if the book describes something very close to what may be happening in my life, I have always felt that a distance existed between me and the author.

Absolutely. I think I found my soul mate in Nathaniel Hawthorne, though he's been gone a long time. He was a descendant of pilgrims just like I am and we had very similar points of view on politics and hypocrisy. Reading about his personality and the types of activities and things he enjoyed thinking about in his diaries, further confirmed how similar I feel he is to me. I really enjoyed his books about spooky Puritans and religious pharisees and decided to do my Honors thesis on his works. I happened to have a professor who was very knowledgeable about the themes Hawthorne discussed, and so that was a really fun project for me to work on.

I have a lot of favorite authors, but some diverge too much from my values and personality for me to feel connected to them as people; I still love their books, just not the author, if that makes sense.

I don't really feel close to the authors of the books I read. I get emotionally invested in their stories and characters, though. And I have such admiration for authors! I couldn't write a book to save my life!

Definitely. When I enjoy a book too much, I go online and try to find other books by this author, and in the process I try to learn a bit more about the person behind the books.

No, I don't. I feel closer to the characters in the book than to the author.

I feel very close to Jude devereux when I read her time travel romances. I can relate to every emotion she describes in the book.
What is the most special thing I did today- I was MYSELF. Happy and in love and unapologetically myself.

Sure... Because I can see things from the author's perspective and it's just as if we wrote story together but I feel more closeness with one or more of the characters

I've met some of my favorite author's. I've felt closer to them after that, but in a couple of cases, I wish I'd never met them. Kevin Hearne and Patrick Rothfuss were a treat!

There is quite the variety of answers on this question. I tend to connect with the author without ever talking to them or even wanting to talk to them. I feel this is because I've done a bit of writing myself. How many of you that connect with the author also feel it's because of having done a bit of writing yourself? (Just curious if this has any bearing on a reader feeling close to an author.)

Absolutely! One of these authors of a book I read some time ago, I couldn't help but imagine how similar our thoughts are. I could clearly see how his thoughts run like a train, one after the other, shifting from one to another in no time, it's like our minds race. Thoughts race with each other, wanting to be the one we think about.

There's definitely some unknown authors that I have reached out to and gained awesome friends that way. I always take the time to research authors, sometimes I'll like a book way more after that.

Definitely. I think the decision of the author to answer any questions is a great one, and I really feel that I've a lot to ask him.

Most of the books I read are fiction, so I cannot really connect with the author. However, I did message my favorite author once and actually received a reply - that was amazing.
