Do we all trap memories in tunes?

How often do you hear a song and listen to it over and over and over again. Years later, you hear that same song and somehow that moment of your life comes back to you in all its vividness.
Sometimes I feel I can chronicle my life so far through songs I've listened to at one time or another. Are we all the same?

I can relate. A song will come on that I haven't heard in a long time and it will bring up certain memories. I have always found it easier to recall things when mixed with music though.

I can think of several songs that bring me back to high school and my childhood. I listened to one album almost my whole sophomore year and anytime I hear any of those songs again I can see myself driving to school.

I read somewhere that there is a close physical proximity in the brain with memory and music so that is why it is easier to remember things when combined with music.

I think this is possible but it varies from person to person.

I know I do it..... When I hear "Footloose", I remember being at a specific high school dance. When I hear "Lean On Me", I recall my first date with my now husband.

I think some people do but not all...Others attach memories to art, scent, cloths, food etc...

I definitely a agree with the OP on the idea that certain songs do trap memories. For me, this is especially true of my youth and the experiences I had in those years. I can hear a certain song from those times and travel back to the place and time in my head and vividly see those people that I was with and what we were doing. I find it a very powerful emotion. Music is wonderful!

It depends on the person. I think most people do since a majority of old people I know loved listening to songs from their era because aside from the typical nostagia they usually have an accompanying memory, either good or bad.

That is the purpose of not just music, but all of art. Art allows us to capture memories by capturing a time, a place and an emotion.

I think our memories can be connected to almost anything around us. But they can connect with music easier than other elements. It is possible that because music (or let's say a song) has been composed purely out of human emotions. Long lasting memories tend to emanate from positive or negative intense emotions.

I hear vertain songs as well and instantly remember what happened in mynlife in the era the song would have been popular. Good memories and bad ones. But it doesn't bring up any emotional attachments for me though

This always happens to me. I love when a song comes on and you can close your eyes and relive that part of your life over again.

Definitely. Nowadays when I hear a song from my past, I also get a flashback. Sometimes they're happy, but other times they make me really sad.

I think it can depend on the memory. Moments of intense happiness or great sadness can all be tied to the song that was playing when the event happened. Years later you hear the song and the emotions flood you as if the event has just happened.
