You mean Yaser? Yaser based his belief on Marian. Hense he compared her to Mary.
In most cases, Doctors put their faith in medicine, because in most cases they determine the outcome. He, however, knew that there was a greater being in control of life and death. He was confused, having put his faith in Marian. He lost himself in her and failed to seek the truth for himself.
As for Elias, there was no discussion about his belief. His story evolved around desire, lust and black magic.

I agree that Yaser seemed to follow Marian's beliefs and faith. He seemed to not be sure of his own feelings, but he loved her so he followed her lead when it came to religion. Maybe he thought it would help their relationship in some way?

He didn't doubt God. He just didn't believe in him. He believed in black magic, love and pleasure, just not God.

Elias was not sure of his faith. He knew lust, he knew infatuation, he was confused about black magic. His Godly belief wasn't questioned.
Yaser on the other hand was the one who didn't believe in God.

I think you've mistaken Elias for Yaser - Yaser is the one that didn't believe in God. He initially thought that founding his marriage on belief was the way to go but he realized that it's more complicated than that...When he lost his 'faith' he also lost the affections he had for his wife - because one of the main reasons he'd married her was because she had faith.

Honestly, I think the author was on the fence about God. There was so much questioning God and religion that I think they where uncertain about their faith.

I think you mean Yaser. He didn't believe in God and that is one of the reasons why his marriage fell apart

Well, Elias was an atheist so he never believed in God, to begin with, but I think the author wanted the reader to see that we all do things based out of love, so Elias went along with Mariam's faith out of his love for her. I also think he had a good point when he wondered how God could allow such destruction in this world, especially when it's bestowed upon the innocent, like his young patient.

I thought the religious doubt angle was more compelling in the Yasir and Mariam story.

Elias believed in black magic, love and pleasure. He never believed in God so we can't just justify that he doubted God. He never doubted God. He lacked the belief in God.

Yaser didn't believe in God but for the sake of his marriage, he used to pretend. This is what caused the downfall of their marriage.
