In the book, Max meets Karis Deen, an environmental researcher, who is not what she seems.

Have you ever met someone who was not what you thought they were at first?

I have a personal opinion that everyone wears a mask. No one is who they appear to be. That is why I'm never completely surprised when someone reveals another side to their character.

I have met people I have misjudged. But sometimes, you really can't predict a thing about others. And then I remember I'm not predictable either, and have secrets too, so everyone's entitled to their own.

Everyone presents their best face when they meet somebody new. Everyone forms their first impression whenever they meet somebody new. It sounds cynical but that has been my experience.

I think everyone keeps parts of themselves hidden from those around them, even those who appear to live by the saying "what you see is what you get."

I agree although I think it is unfortunate that we are encouraged to do so in order to stay within societal norms.

All the time. People can be very good at pretending.

I doubt that I've ever met anyone that would have a truly hidden identity, like Karis. I think most people have one basic character that presents itself in different ways, like the masks mentioned above, depending on the situation or circumstances.

Yes ! All of my life I have come across people who aren't actually what they look like at first. Some close ones were sweet and polite for money. And some were two faced because of their habits. It hurts to remember those memories

I agree that everybody wears a mask. This is either bad intention or good.

I've met people, misjudged for the worst, and met people i thought were great, and turned out terrible. But i do thoroughly believe we shouldn't judge a book by its cover (ironic since i'm posting this in a book club!), but instead get to know it by the pages underneath. Nothing seems to be what it appears to be.

We all have pretenses. At times, we need to pretend to save our name or to save the name of a loved one but pretending to take advantage over other individuals is another story.

Every story has it's characters and life is one big stage. We all play our roles and put on masks. We all are somebody else and pretend to be something else we can take advantage of. Every person I have met is hiding behind created personalities and first impression likely to be false

The world is filled with such people. Sometimes, we turn out to be like that ourselves. It's really not a good attitude to life, honestly and we have to keep striving to be painfully honest with ourselves and others in every way.

I have. There was this one woman I met while I was a freshman in college. At first, she seemed incredibly friendly and nurturing, and was doing whatever it took to help us get into our graduate school of choice. But then she just started removing us from our organization one by one, and before long, she was the only original member left. The funny thing is, I don't even know if she noticed the fact she chased all of us away.
