Thanks for giving the clear distinction between the two.Sasha Walker wrote:To say that challenges are NEEDED in order to obtain success implies that being challenged is a cause of success. Many people are successful without significant challenge or hardship. However, I would argue challenges are needed for growth. The people who are successful without trying usually do not grow. Take the current American president for example. He obtained financial success with ease by cutting corners and using others. Although he completed his goals he actually degraded himself as a person and is still an undeveloped, unintelligent, and incompassionate man.
So I would amend the statement to this: Challenges are the nutrients that enable a person to grow on their journey to success.

Hmmm, "The bigger the struggle, the greater the success and hence its value and honour it bestows on you". Thanks for that lovely quote.Jeconiaomolo wrote:I don't agree that for you to succeed you must pass challenges. Many people have succeeded with limited or no challenges. But I must agree that life is not a smooth Road, there are slopes and hills. As my teacher used to tell me, "The bigger the struggle, the greater the success and hence its value and honour it bestows on you". Those who struggling a lot seems to have greater success.

So true.Londera wrote:Yes, I feel like in most cases they are needed. Most people dont grow if they are comfortable, because then they feel as if there is no need to advance and be better.

You determine how you succeed. Thanks.hebcandle wrote:I think challenges can teach you a lot about yourself and lend to your personal growth. Whether that leads to success would be up to the individual.

Exactly Sarah_Khan, our reactions to situations matters a lot. ThanksSarah_Khan wrote:I don't necessarily think challenges are needed for growth and success but I think that when life throws you difficulties then it could help you develop skills that are needed for success like perseverance and patience. But some people are able to stay patient and not give up without having to go through a hard time. Also some other people have to go through a hard time and they never quite get back up on their own two feet ever again. I guess it all depends on how a person reacts to a certain situation.

I do think challenges present themselves in life not to make us miserable but to shape our characters (and careers)

Wow, so true, Emie Cuevas. We define our success.Emie Cuevas wrote:Whether or not challenges are necessary for success depends on the persons' definition of success. Tony Robbins commented in one of his books that there was a guy at his seminar whose definition of success was "everyday above ground is a good day". Obviously, there are no challenges here!

Exactly, we should not allow it to overcome us. ThanksAlhassan Deen Sesay wrote:For any mortal to achieve in life challenges should be considered as a factor. They are natural phenomena meant for humans but they should not be allowed to overcome us.

Exactly eelavahs-jay, "challenges present themselves in life not to make us miserable but to shape our characters (and careers)".eelavahs-jay wrote:I think success becomes that much more satisfying when one has had to struggle and overcome many obstacles to achieve it. I mean, everyone face hardships (some to a lesser degree) on their journey towards their goal. But I think those who have had all the odds stacked against them revel in it more, once they've earned it. With challenges comes an appreciation for what you have.

We can certainly grow without facing challenges, perhaps through reading or learning from the experiences of others, but definitely, experiencing the lesson first hand and overcoming it is totally different from knowing it in theory only.
