When Sarah encountered the short-face bear, I felt there was a sort of trust both in Sarah and the bear. For Sarah not running away and for the bear to sort of leave the area without feeling the need to approach/potentially attack Sarah. It was like they both could trust each other.
I have to agree with you on this one. Trust is always a really good theme as well. It brings a lot of depth and truth to a story.

I mainly saw the need to preserve an ancient culture, the legends and the wildlife that surrounds those legends. I also read about family and the links between the characters.

The theme of responsible parenthood. The parents of Sarah have made her to go through a lot in her life which is too much for her to bear.

Never thought of it. I think they should be the main themes in fact.

I realized a theme of child abuse where Sarah's stepgrandfather abuses her.

I saw the theme of fighting for something you believe in. Others include hope, faith and bravery. There was a focus on finding lost things or being on the hunt for an elusive something that also cropped up frequently.

There are a lot of themes. There is commitment to each other, that they all stay to look for Sarah when she goes missing and that they all care if William can make it with his bad feet and back. Another theme is cultural and the controversary between legend and myth and data and facts.

The theme of motherhood. I think Sarah was neglected by her mother. Even when she tells her of the sexual abuse that she encountered, her mother seems to do very little about it.

I think the most prominent themes are those of a family, roots, ancestors, and cultural heritage. On the micro-scale, it is about Sarah finding a place where she truly belongs - with he grandfather - and on the macro-scale, it is about Native Americans finding their place in ancient history. The novel also touches upon the themes of sexual abuse and the dichotomy between drawing conclusions about the past based on scientific data and folklore.
