I have just started reading "Strong Heart" so I feel its a good time to lay out my initial thoughts before the character graph takes flight, which I have a feeling will happen.

I can relate to the hurt justifying the rebellion in Sarah's mind. The defense mechanism employed by many teens, I was one of them. The guarded inching closer of a granddaughter to her grandfather is a page right out my own life. I see myself connect to this character at a very personal level.

I envy of her strong character, her courage when facing the bear or ability to just simply storm off whenever she disliked the situation. She was stubborn, impudent and bossy, frank and brave in any situation. Those are the perfect set of skills to survive and I admire her for that.

She appears to be snooty and not the adjusting kind in the initial pages of the book but later proves to be an interesting character as we read through the rest of the novel.

At the beginning I thought Sara was a wild girl andshe proved to be one as she gets angry really quick and tries to leave them from the trip. But as the story progress she gets calm and does many difficult tasks in her own story which are too much for a 12 year old girl.

Well, Sarah may have been annoying, but I felt she was true to life. Uprooted, traumatized, thrown into an unfamiliar situation... how is she supposed to act?! She definitely had to come to an understanding of who she was before she was able to mature.

The evolution of the character with her experiences is beautifully depicted.

She definitely matured in the book.

I just hoped that the things she went through didn't make her into a full on bitter person. I was worried at the beginning, but then she came around for me at the end.

I equally felt put off with her initial bratty attitude, especially when they were all trying to be nice to her. After all, as suddenly as she showed up on Tom's doorstep, being dumped there by someone claiming that they all had family ties, especially as he was on the verge of making an already scheduled journey, Tom had as much right/reason to be resentful of the intrusion. She didn't have to be all up in his face and that of his friends by being rude, even as they all tried very hard to be accommodating. Glad she eased up on that subsequently as the story developed.

I felt she entered the story as a very trouble young lady. You could feel her bad attitude right from the beginning. During the camping trip I felt she was a snarky teenager. By the end of the story she had matured some, but I felt like she still needed an attitude adjustment.
