January "Books Made Into Movies" Discussion Help

Post by Heidi M Simone »

Here is a place where we can discuss our options and help each other find the right book to read. Some suggestions for this month's "Book Made Into Movie" genre are:
  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio
  • Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
  • Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
  • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Jaws by Peter Benchley
  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  • Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins
  • Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
  • Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
  • Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
  • Avengers graphic novels by Marvel
  • Several Nicholas Sparks books
  • Several Stephen King books
I found this link on Goodreads that have more suggestions: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/163 ... ood_movies

This list does not do this genre justice, so please offer your recommendations and you might help someone find the perfect book! :techie-studyingbrown:

Sphere by Michael Crichton - I have both read the book and seen the movie. I think the book was better.
Coma by Robin Cook - This has been made into at least two different movies. I enjoyed them both. I haven't actually read the book yet, though.

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling - I read the series and watch all the movies. The books were better, but I enjoyed the movies as well.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - loved the book. Again, the book is better but I enjoyed the movie.

Okay Gali - WHICH Pride and Prejudice?? Cause I thought the BBC version that was like 6 hours or so was pretty close to the book...

The movie, the old one. I saw it many years ago.

Pride and Prejudice

This is the one you need to see! I'm telling you! It's great. It was a mini-series on TV. Check it out.

I think I watched an episode or two many years ago. I will check it out, thank you. :)

I'm so glad Gali. It's long, but the characters are perfect. It goes just by the book too!

Wow! Once you started, you must not have been able to stop. I still have that one and I pull it out and watch it when my husband is away. I LOVE it... Goes right by the book and the characters are fabulous! Lydia is great, and I fall in love with Mr. Darcy myself every time!

I really enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas both as a book and a movie (though I liked the movie a little bit more). Another one that comes to mind simply off the top of my head is Me Before You by JoJo Moyes since I absolutely adored both.

And I haven't read it yet, though it's on my list for this year, there's also Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. The trailer looks fantastic and as far as I'm aware the book has excellent reviews so it's definitely worth considering.

Most of the classics, Dickens etc, transpose quite well and I loved the different versions of Pride and Prejudice. Tolkien was great and the Harry Potters followed the books quite well - I understand JK Rowling kept firm control. It's never quite the same though. You can't only see the movie and leave the book out. Imagine not knowing anything about Peeves? Horrors, though, from the two Percy Jackson movies. If you can't do a good job of bringing a fantasy movie to life, don't try. The absolute worst is The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. Loved the book, loved the series. The film was a mess, character, plot, everything was changed for commercial appeal.

I found Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie at the library the other day. I haven't started yet, but I'm really looking forward to it!
