Why?
Because it is easy to do some acts of kindness, to give one out of the two i have; even to share half of the one i have. But to take pain instead on behalf of another is never easy. To do this repeatedly must be even harder.
It must have hurt her more, she who understood what being an old maid meant and whose life had been ruined by it, it must have hurt her more than it hurt the author. To him the teasing of his sisters was merely upsetting. To Aunt Theresa very likely, those words turned and pushed at the knife buried deep within her.
To take pain for others isn't always possible but when it is, it is one of the most beautiful acts of love.

Aunt Teresa actually stood out among the other ordinary gurus. Her values truly influenced the author. I too loved her selflessness.
