I feel like the men had a reason to be there, but if they were given greater roles in the story, it would have diminished the essence of the story, the women's friendships.

I think the men had little to no impact on the story but not in a bad way the focus was on the protagonists so the book would be fine either ways without the men in it

The presence of men and the supporting role they played did not matter much in the book and should have been left out completely. The story would have been the same without men in the picture. I guess the author wanted to add a little level of balance in the lives of the women by adding the fact that they had partners so they would not be labelled as partners in the same sex orientation.

Finding a man is the central theme of Sophie's entire storyline. Thatcher does nothing; he is merely kind of present. About Amanda's spouse, it appeared as though he was merely a plot device to give Amanda an excuse to storm out of the house at the conclusion.
