Fantasy/Magical Realism Book Help

Post by hsimone »

Fantasy:
- Set in fictional universe
- Uses magic or other supernatural elements
- Magic and magical creatures are common in this genre
- Tends to be speculative (i.e. What if vampires were real?)

Book options for fantasy:
  • A Song of Ice and Fire series
  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians series
  • A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Magical Realism:
- Is a sub-genre of fantasy
- Magic or supernatural presented in a real world/mundane setting
- Shows the world through someone's eyes, and tends to not be speculative

Book options for magical realism:
  • Harry Potter series
  • The Gallery of Wonders by Marc Remus
Goodreads is always a good resource to begin looking at what book(s) to read:
- https://www.goodreads.com/genres/magical-realism

Do you have some suggestions for others of what to read this month?

Has anyone been reading a fantasy that they have been enjoying that they would recommend? I'm always looking for more fantasy books to read!

Well... Not that I'm biased or anything, but the Magi Charter series by Jordan David is a great one! It starts off kind of in a more young adult way, but it quickly moves into different genres and settings that will blow your mind.
Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen; the more select, the more enjoyable.

Hm...is that the series where it follows an elf? I don't know much about the series, except that most of the books have the word "elf" in the title, lol. :)

They do, but after the first 2 books, it really becomes something even more. There is magic (Merlin is even in the series.) There are powerful runes that are used and enemies. The 7th book even takes place in the 28th century.

Oh wow! There does seem to be a lot going on in the series! Do you know how many books there will be in the series?

There will be a total of 9. The 7th JUST came out, so the last 2 will be at least another year or so...

Hm...okay. I might have to wait until all are out before giving this a try. I like to try to read a series that I can just read from start-to-finish without waiting for the next book, so I'll keep this one in mind. Thank you for the recommendation! :)
