I think an important lesson from Ironbark Hill is that the young must be protected. The effects of alcohol abuse and domestic violence are far reaching and devastating. The inability of the characters to react maturely and confidently to many situations all stem from the abuse she suffered at the hand of the step-father.

I feel like the grand lesson that resonates with the whole story is that love is a beautiful thing that is hard to find, and in its absence, lacking substitutes are very tempting, though not worthwhile in the long run.
