They were kindred spirits. Both were outsiders, both had addictions, both had trouble finding love. I thought their friendship was the strong point of the book.

Both Gary and Duke are deserters of their various homes. They acknowledge this similarity and it brings them together and form a basis of their friendship.

I like your argument. Their dysfunctional souls got attracted to each other thus they could connect quite easily

Luck and opportunity drew them together. Should your question instead be, what made their relationship work? Or what kept them together?

They had similar things going on with them: they were both addicts and seemed to be running from something.

I think what brought them together is first the fact that they both ran away from home, secondly, they were both struggling with addiction.

I think Gary and Duke were both running from something and they saw that in each other. I don't think alcohol was what drew them together.

I think that the problems that they were encountering in life is what brought them together.

Weaknesses in people, tend to build bonds between them. They see themselves as not being alone in their predicaments. I think this was a huge factor in the bond between Gary and Duke.

If its meant to be it will be. I think the two were bound to meet, irrespective of of their love for alcohol or drugs. They could have bump into each other on the street, started a conversation about the weather, and before you know after a awhile, they are besties!!!

I think both of their lifestyle and similarity of their problem brought them together. At times, when you have things in common, it makes the communication flow well and both parties put head together on how to find a solution to their respective problems.

The fact that they both had the same vice which was drinking is what I think initially brought them closer together. After this initial meeting of the minds, I believe the fact that Duke felt he could assist Gary in some way kept them together. Gary was alone in life at the time he met Duke and the fact that they both had similar life paths helped to strengthen the bond between them. Oh, and yes, I do feel as though they both began their journeys into adulthood running from something.

They were both running away from their past and were both addicts, so they were able to empathize with each other.
