When Duke sees Gary in the same position as himself a few years ago, he wants to help him and lead Gary and himself to a path of redemption. That's what drew them together according to me.

Duke and Gary are both addicts and risk takers. They fled their families and lived in the moment with little regard for society's norms. Gary recognized a kindred spirit in Duke; one that had lived longer than he could hope for himself. It was inevitable that they found each other.

They were both strong personalities, and both could not settle for less than what they really wanted out of life.

I believe it has to do with the fact that they both are troubled souls. Gary is going through the tough days that Duke has already beem through. So Duke sort of takes Gary under his wings, helps him to cope, guides him with his experience. On the other hand, Gary finds in Duke someone who would never judhe him, having tread the same path himself. He finds the best mentor he could in Duke.

I think Gary reminded Duke of himself when he was young. So, he didn't want this young life to waste like his did and imparted wisdom showing how to not ruin himself.
