Yes, I agree, the tatoos make Duke outstanding. However, it is his personality that builds his character.

His tattoos are equally important as his character on stage. i would say the tattoos actually fire up his personality. And i also believe he could still be outstanding without them.

I loved how much he reveled in them and the special meaning that each one had, but I think his personality on the stage is what keeps people riveted to his performances. The tattoos just catch people's attention to watch him in the first place.
I agree. Duke's personality has a stronger impression than his physical features. So is with the rest of us.

I think Dukes tattoos add to his people. So it is a bit hard to separate the too since the make a while. Without his personality, he wouldn't be that glorious to people, so I think, and without his tattoos, his personality wouldn't be the way it was. Therefore, this holistic view on him makes him who he is.

I think, just like huge muscles and a muscular body is to a boxer, so is Duke's tattoos to him. Not that he would not be a good performer without the tattoos but the tattoos add to who he is and the tattoos help entice the crowd and gathers the attention he needs.

I think his tattoos really added to the intrigue that surrounded him. They made him even more unique and "dangerous." I don't think he would have been as widely recognized without the tattoos. I do agree with CatInTheHat though that they would have such a huge impact today.

I think with Duke, as I do with anyone with tattoos (myself included) that they more show who a person is rather than makes them who they are. I feel like due to his personality, he'd still be the same person, even without the ink.

Personality is far greater than the tattoos. While tattoos may draw initial attention it is the personality that will keep it.

The tattoos are part of the Duke as we see him but even without them, he would still stand out. This is due to his character and acts witnessed throughout the novel.

Duke's personality is what did it for me while reading the book. Now, during the time the book is set in, I do think that his tattoos would have made him stand out much more than his personality.

Since we find diverse preferences within the same audience, I would say that both Duke's personality and tattoos play a big part in his popularity.

No, I think that his tattoos are an integral part of his character and he communicates to others through them.
