It sounds weird and kind of funny but I did not pay much attention to that anyway. I just had to carry on with the very interesting story.

Girl Dog was the actual name of the Sword Swallower's golden retriever. I'm not sure why he called her that. It is a very interesting thought. At the end of his life, I gave him a Jack Russell terrier, and he did not name it with a conventional name but rather a name that described the dog. I can't remember what he called him. Capt. Don Leslie (Duke Reynolds) was a very loving soul who treated women with respect and dignity.

Yeah the dog do make him feel human after several setbacks he has encountered in life.

I believe it simply proves that Duke views dogs as masculine animals and, as a result, included the gender in the name he gave to his dog because, at the time he found her, that is what made her stand out to him.

Actually I would be expectation weird stuffs from an addict. The name of his pet was one of it. I did not give it much though I just had to continue with the interesting story.

I believe this reveals Duke's perception of dogs as masculine beings, and consequently, he incorporates gender into his dog's name because it highlights her distinctiveness to him, or at least that was the case when he initially discovered her. Duke embodies a stereotypically masculine persona, which carries with it various societal expectations and preconceptions.

I personally consider this a minor detail with absolutely no significance.
