The drugs was a major part of the circus life. Rejecting the drug would mean cutting off from the circus life entirely. Duke life would definitely have turned out different without those drugs.

After years of watching frightening commercials on TV, participating in anti-drug lessons during health class, and listening to tales of addicts who managed to recover, I believe I would have refrained from taking it. Without the benefit of such training, it's impossible to determine what choices I might have made. Consequently, I find it difficult to pass judgment on him or predict which path he would have taken due to the lack of similar preparation.
