Personally,i felt he was seriously warning Gary of the dangers of alcohol. Most cases of domestic violence can be traced to alcoholism in either one of the partners.

That is nothing but the truth. Alcoholism will only build a broken family

I quote that Duke said this out of personal remorse and grievance. He played himself for indulging in alcohol, perhaps he would have been a better version of himself if alcohol was out of the equation.

I think he was honestly warning Gary about alcohol and he also did not want to bring in anyone into his very complicated life. Imagine a relationship with a drug addict. I think he did not want to punish anyone.

I believe the statement means that a man cannot be a good parent and also be an alcoholic. He has to reduce his excessive intake of alcohol.

I believe that in addition to warning him, he was also expressing his own regret. You cannot be an alcoholic and have a family. Either option is your choice. Neither is possible.

Duke was telling Gary the truth about the complication addiction brings to ones life. To drug or alcoholic addict can end up being a good parent.

The book serves as a sincere cautionary tale about the perils of alcoholism and its impact on family life. It emphasizes that if a person desires to build a stable and nurturing family, they must completely eliminate alcohol from their life. The book also highlights the idea that one cannot prioritize both alcohol and family, as alcohol's destructive influence is undeniable. It emphasizes the importance of sharing personal experiences to raise awareness about the dangers of alcoholism and serves as a valuable lesson to understand.
